On May 13, 2022, police say Romen Phelps crashed through the gates of Dreyfoos School of the Arts and endangered people on campus before being shot and killed by a West Palm Beach police officer. Family and friends of Phelps are calling for all the evidence from that day to become available.
Family and friends of Romen Phelps, who was killed during confrontation with police at Dreyfoos School of the Arts last year rallied outside West Palm Beach Police Department one year after incident.
“The evidence in this case indisputably shows that Phelps’ behavior created an extremely unsettling and dangerous situation at a public school, during school hours,” Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg wrote in the May 3 letter to Chief Frank Adderley. “...the officer’s use of deadly force was objectively reasonable under the circumstances.”
West Palm Beach Police say 33-year old Romen Phelps was acting erratically when he stormed into the theater at Dreyfoos School of the Arts and engaged in a fight with an off-duty cop who shot him. Organizers of the vigil say they want people to be aware of a mental health crisis.
"No one's really here to get upset or start a fight, but really to honor his legacy so that he's remembered" said a fellow Dreyfoos graduate.
