Former Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Officer Phillip Baker was convicted Wednesday of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle after a 2017 speeding death that killed a pedestrian, but was acquitted on more serious felony charges and won't serve jail time.

Judge Robert Ervin said he needs more time to decide whether the lawsuit can move forward as a class action but added that the timetable for that decision would be “sooner than later.”
