“We’re down 70% on catalytic converter theft as compared to the same time last year,” Inspector Robert LaPollo of the NYPD's Auto Crimes Unit said.
The New York City Police Department reported a 51% increase in vehicle thefts compared to the same time period a year ago, representing a disturbing new crime trend in the Big Apple.
Police say about 5,420 vehicles have been reported stolen in 2022 — and roughly 2,200 of them were cases where motorists left their vehicles with the engine running, or unlocked, often with the keys or key fobs inside.
