New Rochelle Police Commissioner To Retire After 47 Years With Department

The longest-tenured member in the history of one of Westchester’s largest police departments announced he will be stepping aside after nearly five decades on the force.
New Rochelle Police Commissioner Joseph Schaller, who has been with the department since 1974, announced that he will be retiring over the summer, to be replaced by Deputy Commissioner Robert Gazzola, who joined the department in 1986.
Schaller’s retirement is effective as of Wednesday, June 30, with Gazzola officially taking over the following day on Thursday, July 1.
Schaller was first appointed to New Rochelle in August 1974, following by promotions to Sergeant (1979), Lieutenant (1982), Captain (1988), Deputy Police Commissioner (2015), and Commissioner (2018). ....

A $10,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of a shooting suspect who killed one man and wounded four others in Westchester.
The Westchester County District Attorney’s Office and FBI each offered $5,000 for information that leads investigators to the suspects who fired several shots into a yard in the area of Horton Avenue and Brook Street in New Rochelle shortly before midnight on Saturday, May 1.
A 29-year-old man from Brooklyn was pronounced dead at the scene, a second was hospitalized and underwent surgeries, while the others suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
“The New Rochelle community is understandably shocked and scared by this brazen shooting and we are working closely with the (New Rochelle Police Department) and the FBI to identify and apprehend the shooter,” Westchester County District Attorney Mimi Rocah said. ....

Westchester DA, FBI offer reward in shootings that left one man dead

One man was killed and four others were wounded in the shootings, which happened just a few minutes before midnight Saturday.
Westchester County District Attorney Mimi Rocah s office and the FBI are each offering $5,000 in reward money.
The 29-year-old man who died is believed to be a resident of Brooklyn. He was pronounced dead at the scene. One man was shot in the back and underwent surgery at an area hospital. The other three victims suffered injuries police said were not life-threatening.
On Tuesday, police released surveillance video of a dark sedan making a U-turn on Memorial Highway at its intersection with Lincoln Avenue and Brook Street. It is believed to be tied to the shootings at Horton Avenue and Brook Street. ....
