Protections for small-scale farmers receive support

Protections for small-scale farmers receive support

A measure to remove the size requirement on protections for bona fide commercial farmers saw bipartisan support during a Wednesday hearing.
Current statutes provide protections for those who engage in agriculture, mandating that they may not be forced to stop activities due to change in usage of surrounding lands or zoning. But they limit the protections to those whose farms are over one-half acre in size.
Bill 134, introduced by Sen. Clynt Ridgell, would simply strike that provision from law. It comes on the heels of the senator’s recent measure to require all commercial farmers to register with the Guam Department of Agriculture, which has become public law.
