Thousands flock in for Rotorua Marathon, local claims second win in a row

Rain drops and sweat dripped down his face as the crowd roared for the young local builder running towards his second consecutive victory in the Rotorua Marathon.
Rotorua s Michael Voss, 24, crossed the line of
the 57th Rotorua Marathon five minutes ahead of his nearest rival.
Voss is the fourth man in history to claim back-to-back titles.
He joined more than 4000 runners, walkers and joggers who descended on the city s Government Gardens for Saturday s event. ....

Two former champions will revive their
long-standing rivalry at this weekend’s ASB Christchurch
Marathon.
While the national marathon
championship will take centre stage at the 40th anniversary
ASB Christchurch Marathon this Sunday, it is the Half
Marathon that could produce the hardest fought race of the
day.
In a race of champions amongst men, 2019 half
marathon champion, Daniel Balchin, and 2016 champion, Oska
Baynes, will line up together yet again. Balchin (30) and
Baynes (29) have gone head-to-head in races all over the
country for more than a decade, but it is in Christchurch
where their rivalry has been keenest.

Rotorua s Michael Voss won the Tarawera Ultramarathon 50km race.

Rotorua s Michael Voss knows the trails surrounding his hometown well but is under no illusion that fact will make for an easy day out at this weekend s Tarawera Ultramarathon.
Voss, who took the victory and a course record in the Tarawera 50km race in 2020, has stepped up to the 102km event this year and is looking forward to his first taste of the Ultra-Trail World Tour.
I live just down the road from the forest so I m pretty familiar with the course, that s quite a big advantage as I wouldn t want to be running it blind, that s for sure, Voss said. ....
