Back in 2020, a chemical compound, called GEN-X, was detected in the water supply for the Roanoke Valley. The water reaching residents is now being filtered and is safe to drink, according to the Western Virginia Water Authority. However, it’s not clear whether it’s safe to catch and eat fish along the Roanoke River, so scientists with the Department of Environmental Quality are trying to learn more.

At least 200 thousand families across the Commonwealth are in need of affordable housing. Building new apartment buildings and town homes is one way to help. There are also projects to revitalize existing homes, including one in Floyd County.
