A contractor who diverted a major Hawke’s Bay river without consent has been issued a formal warning. On March 18, Hawke’s Bay Regional Council staff discovered that Russell Roads had diverted the main channel of the Ngaruroro River, near Maraekakaho, west of Hastings. The company has resource consent to extract gravel from the riverbed. It is permitted to divert minor braids of the river, but not the main channel. After investigating the matter, the council issued the company a formal warning notice late last month. ....
