Marikana Trial: Defence probes sequence of events as witness continues cross-examination

A police officer is on his fifth day of cross-examination in the murder trial of former North West deputy police commissioner William Mpembe and five other officers.
The officers are on trial for murder and attempted murder following events on 13 August 2012 in Marikana.
Defence lawyer are comparing the sequence of events he had given in a witness statement, to evidence he gave in court.

Marikana trial: Mpembe will not take responsibility because police officers were killed, witness tells court

Sergeant Benjamin Mahume has rejected any suggestion that evidence he gave in the so-called Marikana trial is not the truth.
The officer concluded his cross-examination by former North West deputy police commissioner William Mpembe s lawyer on Thursday.
He will now be cross-examined by two other defence lawyers on Friday.
Former North West deputy police commissioner William Mpembe will not take responsibility for the tragic events that occurred at the Lonmin K3 shaft in Marikana on 13 August 2012 because police officers were also killed, a witness told the North West High Court in Mahikeng on Thursday.
Sergeant Benjamin Mahume said his evidence about Mpembe s role on the day was truthful and was what he had witnessed. ....

Marikana trial: The situation was 'tense', emotional officer testifies under cross-examination

A police officer testifying in the murder trial of former North West deputy police commissioner William Mpembe told the court one of his colleagues died at the hands of striking miners.
The officer became emotional as he described the events.
The trial continues until 28 May.
A police officer struggled to contain himself at the Marikana trial in the North West High Court on Wednesday when he testified about the death of one of his colleagues on 13 August 2012 at Lonmin K3 shaft.
State witness Sergeant Benjamin Mahume was being cross-examined for a second day by Jan Ellis, the lawyer representing former North West deputy police commissioner William Mpembe. The cross-examination was technical and focused on various aspects of what happened that day when police and striking miners clashed, resulting in the death of five people. ....
