kwingert@messengernews.net Schools in the Fort Dodge Community School District are collecting pennies — 685,000 of them, to be exact. Through April 16, the FDCSD is hosting its annual Miles of Pennies fundraiser at the five elementary schools and the middle school. The effort started Tuesday. Each school has a different goal and a different use for the funds raised. Pennies — or any loose change, really — might not mean a lot to a person’s bank account, but to the school district, they can lead to new educational resources. When It Started: Previously, the school record was held by Tim Olson in 200 where he logged 29 consecutive games with a hit. Olson went on to the MLB to play for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies. Now, 21 years later a new Gator kept it going. Paul Newman's camp for ill children partially destroyed in large fire

He said at least six other local departments assisted in putting out the fire. “There was a heavy, heavy fire,” he said. “That section of the structure was burning pretty hard and it was close to the dining hall. It was very hard work that saved that.” Borgman said it took about 90 minutes to bring the fire under control and firefighters were also able to save the camp’s infirmary. It was not immediately clear if anyone was working at the camp at the time of the fire and the origin and cause of the blaze were being investigated by federal, state and local authorities.
