The site's opening comes the same day as a public hearing on a bill in state legislature which aims to reduce restrictions on Syringe Services Programs
Currently, Maine has a “one for one” law. LD 1909 abolishes the one for one rule that people can only get one clean syringe for each used syringe returned and no more than 10 syringes at a time.

The 636 deaths, a 23% increase over 2020, are largely the result of fentanyl being added to other drugs. Increased isolation and other pandemic challenges also were factors.
