The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Aliyu, who contested on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of the election, but Umar challenged his victory on the grounds of Aliyu’s deputy qualification as well as electoral fraud.
The Sokoto State Governorship Elections Petition Tribunal on Saturday, dismissed the petition challenging the election of Ahmed Aliyu as the governor of the state. The three-man panel of the tribunal led by Justice Haruna Msheila in its ruling dismissed the petition of the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate, Saidu Umar, challenging the victory of the governor in the March 18 poll. According to the panel in the Petition No EPT/SK/GOV/01/2023, the petitioners failed to prove their case beyond reasonable doubt.
Umar challenged the election of Aliyu of the All Progressives Congress and Gobir over an alleged non-qualification and electoral fraud during the March 18, 2023 governorship election.
