A Dubuque man whose first conviction for murder was thrown out by Iowa appellate courts has been convicted again in the 2017 death of his girlfriend.
Fontae Buelow, now 29, was arrested after Samantha Link, 21, died in March 2017 from three stab wounds. He was convicted at trial in January 2018 of second-degree murder, despite his claim that Link stabbed herself as he attempted to end their relationship, and sentenced to 50 years in prison.
At Buelow s first trial, the judge refused to allow evidence related to Link s mental health, including testimony from a former boyfriend who says Link grabbed a knife at one point in an argument during their relationship. In December 2019, the Iowa Court of Appeals overturned the conviction on that basis, and the Iowa Supreme Court affirmed that ruling in December 2020.
