Should the Russian Federatoin cut off its electricity grid connection with the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian grids, this need not mean any immediate outage in Estonia, energy expert Sandor Liive says, adding that even without Russia's energy warfare approach, risks always exist in any grid system
According to Sandor Liive, former chair of Eesti Energia's management board, there is no need to leave the Nord Pool power exchange to ensure Estonian consumers can buy electricity at reasonable prices, there is a much simpler solution.
The Nord Pool electricity market rules need a thorough overhaul because the current day-ahead trading system is not fit for purpose, said Märt Ots, advisor to IT and foreign trade minister Kristjan Järvan (Isamaa) and former head of the Competition Authority (Konkurentsiamet).
The Nord Pool power exchange should be made far more transparent, and the exact reasons why the price of electricity spikes so dramatically on any given day should be explained, said Sandor Liive, former board chair at Estonian state-owned energy group Eesti Energia.
