Kolkata: May 2, 2021 turned out to be a historic day for the Left parties for two reasons. First, by winning the assembly election in Kerala, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) broke a long cycle of one-term government in the state which was continuing since 1977. Second, the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Front failed to win even a single seat in the West Bengal assembly election. In a first since independence, there won’t be a Left representative in the Bengal state assembly.

As the absolute defeat of the Left Front (LF) in the Bengal elections became clear on May 2, 63-year-old Tanmay Bhattacharya, sometime DYFI president, retired bank employee, former MLA from Dum Dum North and member of the district committee of the CPM, laid the blame at the feet of the state leadership on live television. The district committee has distanced itself from the views. Excerpts from a conversation with him:
Q:
What according to you is the reason for the LF not winning any seats in this election?
A: This vote was a vote against Modi and the people did not have faith that the LF would be a viable alternative against him. The people gifted the captainship of this state’s fight against Modi to Mamata Banerjee. We can argue whether they are right or wrong but the truth is the people have entrusted Mamata Banerjee with the captainship of the state. So the first and most important thing for us is to bow down before this verdict of the people.

West Bengal Assembly Elections 2021: Mamata announces compensation of Rs 2 lakh for all post-poll violence victims's kin

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of those killed in post-results violence in Bengal irrespective of their political loyalties, emphasising her government would practise the inclusive politics she has promised.
The assistance is for victims from “every party, every community, every creed... any murder”, Mamata stressed at a news conference in Nabanna.
She urged the BJP to come to terms with the Bengal mandate and “show some restraint”, blaming the party for most of the violence.
“You know well that most of the violence took place by May 3, while the (Election Commission’s) model code of conduct was in force. During that time, when the Election Commission was in charge of the state’s law and order, 16 people were killed,” she said.
