Using gut enzymes identified in an earlier study that convert group A red blood cells to group O, by cleaving off sugars from A and B antigens, a new study has developed a system to perfuse donor lungs ex vivo to convert lungs from blood type A to O. The new findings could potentially improve fairness in lung allocation, and reduce wait times for transplantation, decreasing mortality for patients on waitlists.
