The appointment of Sgt. Christopher Giles as interim police chief comes as former Chief Scott MacMaster is leaving the top job to become a patrol officer for the Gardiner Police Department.

The Richmond Board of Selectmen voted Monday to accept the resignation of Scott MacMaster, who has been police chief in Richmond for a decade. Sgt. James Donnell will serve as acting police chief after MacMaster leaves.
Scott MacMaster, 46, of Richmond, was appointed by a 6-1 vote following a two-and-a-half hour executive session.
Scott MacMaster is to begin working in Gardiner later this month.
