Proclaiming Jesus' victory in what we say and do – Catholic Philly

“The Lord is Risen! Alleluia, Alleluia!” “He is risen indeed! Alleluia, Alleluia!”
The Gospel account for Sunday’s liturgy is from the Gospel according to Luke. The passage follows the encounter between Jesus and the two disciples who were traveling to Emmaus on that “third day.” At first, they do not recognize him as they journey along. When they reach the destination, Jesus sits with them at table, takes bread, says the blessing and breaks it. It is now, at this point, that their “eyes are opened” and they recognize him, whereupon he vanishes from their sight.
Those two disciples made their way back to Jerusalem where they find the Eleven. They announce that they have seen the risen Lord. The announcement is reciprocated as he has already appeared to Peter. Now the account continues in today’s reading. Jesus, once again, appears in the locked room. He offers them the greeting “Peace be with you.” Naturally they are “terrified.” ....

Dancing on our graves with the risen Christ

Gina Christian

A few years ago, a friend and I visited her late husband’s grave in a central Pennsylvania cemetery a location so rural that farm animals were pastured on two sides of the neat rows of markers.

A brief rain had freshened the breeze; the mountains silently swelled around us, and though a misty grief still enfolded my friend’s heart, her quirky wit broke through in occasional quips and chuckles. After her spouse’s long years of illness, and thanks to her deep faith, she had learned to entrust her burden of sorrow to mightier Hands. ....

Don't clean up Calvary: The bloody, saving reality of Christ's crucifixion – Catholic Philly

Gina Christian
By Gina Christian • Posted April 1, 2021
After watching “The Passion of the Christ” with friends a few years back, I’d mentioned that in recent years I’d taken to reading a medical analysis of crucifixion during Holy Week.
One of the women in our group, shaken by the film’s graphic description of Jesus’ sufferings, looked at me in horror. “Why would you feel the need to do that?” she asked.
The question was a good one. Was it morbid curiosity that had prompted my research, an unholy reveling in shock and gore? Or was I looking to understand something that so many representations of the cross particularly those in modern times have failed to capture? ....
