Social media giant Meta faces a possible ban within the next 10 days across Europe on the consent-free use of personal data for ad personalization. A Meta

The European Data Protection Board said Wednesday it had adopted a binding decision that will ban Facebook and Instagram owner Meta from using the personal data of users for targeted advertisements.The EDPB said it took the decision following a request from Norway's data regulator, which earlier this year imposed a ban on sending Facebook and Instagram users targeted advertisements based on their personal data which the social media platform collects without their explicit consent.

The move could lead to a blanket ban on Meta running tracking ads without consent across the EU single market if the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) agrees the action is merited. Meta may also switch to asking users for their permission to run "personalized ads" before any Board action, as it has claimed it intends to.

Troubled edtech major Byju's has fired nearly 500 staffers in yet another round of layoffs, this time in the mentoring and product expert functions, sources told ET. The company however said it had only let go of 100 employees who had been put on a performance improvement plan.
