Dennis spoke to Newsday moments after the Prime Minister announced the government s decision to close malls, bars, restaurants, churches, gyms, casinos, cinemas, and theatres. Flights to Tobago will be reduced, as will seabridge capacity. These measures will come into effect from midnight on Thursday until May 23. Beaches are already closed. Dennis said Dr Rowley’s move was the responsible thing to do, given the serious surge in covid19 cases, and the island can only brace for another economic blow. ....

Photo by Ayanna Kinsale THA Chief Secretary Ancil Dennis says while the probability of ash from St Vincent’s La Soufriere volcano reaching Tobago is low, the Tobago Emergency Management Emergency (TEMA) is putting things in place. He told Newsday a contingency plan is being prepared in the event Tobago finds itself in the same position as Barbados and Grenada which have been dealing with ash deposits from the volcano which erupted on Friday last week after months of renewed activity. As of 1 pm on Monday, the Met Office said it had received no official reports of ash deposits in the country. Meteorologist Saide Shakeer told Newsday by e-mail, We are currently monitoring all reports from authorised and official bodies as well as atmospheric conditions and factors that may influence the movement of ash either directly or indirectly over our area. ....

On Friday, PDP deputy political leader Farley Augustine announced the party’s establishment of an alternative executive council to serve the needs of Tobagonians until a solution to the six-six deadlock in the THA is reached. Augustine said the alternative council, which is expected to begin its work on Monday, will focus largely on community-based initiatives. He added it will rely on the skills and resources of people in communities with support from the island’s corporate and civil society sectors. ....

Photo by Ayanna Kinsale THA Chief Secretary Ancil Dennis has revealed he was exposed to a primary contact of a recent covid19 case on Good Friday and will be in quarantine at home. In a Facebook post on Monday, Dennis said while his exposure to the primary contact was minimal and mask-wearing and physical distancing were practised during the interaction, he decided to get tested for the virus. Dennis said although the initial test results came back negative, he will remain quarantined at his home for the next two weeks. ....
