She had it all – a job in the Riigikogu and a comfortable apartment in the heart of Tallinn. A month ago, she gave it all up and sat on a wobbly three-legged stool in Narva. How does life in Estonia seem from the last homely house on the border? Mayor of Narva Katri Raik (SDE) knows and tells. Have you regretted leaving the Riigikogu over the last two weeks days? Not once. Perhaps Center would have tried to recruit you for the new government? I have served as minister once, and there are just two beautiful days in the life of a minister – the roses you get on the first day and those on the last. What happens in between makes you feel like you are plugged into the power grid at 7 a.m. and unplugged at 11 p.m. every day. ....

Estonian Prime Minister Juri Ratas said he would resign on Wednesday amid corruption allegations against his political party. Estonia s Public Prosecutor alleged that members of the Centre Party, including Secretary-General Mihhail Korb, had engaged in influence-peddling related to a real estate development in Porto Franco. Estonian businessman Hillar Teder had agreed to donate up to one million euros to the Centre Party in exchange for the right to build a car park in favour of the real estate development, the public prosecutor s office alleges. The evidence collected from the middle of January last year to the present refers to various crimes, on the basis of which public proceedings were initiated against people suspected of a crime today, Chief Public Prosecutor Taavi Pern said in a post on Facebook, laying out other money-laundering allegations as well. ....
Leading members of the opposition Social Democratic Party (SDE) think that Jüri Ratas (Center) resignation as prime minister early Wednesday morning should be followed by his party going into opposition, since the latest scandal involving a loan to a real estate development proves the party still needs to clean itself up. MEP Sven Mikser (SDE) says that Reform Party leader Kaja Kallas holds the key to this, with SDE s leader Indrek Saar saying Center continuing in office would be unethical. Ratas resigned early Wednesday following an Internal Security Service (ISS) investigation into a €39-million loan to a Tallinn real estate development by state credit agency KredEx. Five people, including Center s former Secretary-General Mihhail Korb, are under suspicion of corruption. ....
Leading Center Party politicians have still not found a consensus on whether or not the party should allow former Narva mayor Aleksei Jevgrafov, along with many city council members, into the party. Narva has been in the midst of political limbo since fall, which is being amplified as the number of COVID-19 cases in the region continues to grow. Center Party deputy chairman Jaanus Karilaid told ETV s Aktuaalne kaamera on Wednesday that according to the coalition agreement signed by Center s political group and electoral bloc Meie Narva, Center Party would receive the position of chairman of the city council and Social Democrat MP Katri Raik would become mayor. The two blocs hold 17 of the 31-seat council s votes. ....
