Those two shocking things were happening. so just from a security perspective, aside from the nature of why these people did this, that was really extremely surprising to me and i have seen a lot of things going on in the capitol. where were you as it unfolded? i was out by the building talking to the people coming in and out and trying to find out — the challenge for me was trying to get at why or what did he hope to accomplish. there were different types of people there. they were not a big monolith. which i think is unfortunate. i think the press reports it that way. there were different ...

In other words, most religious institutions are. they want people of their own faith to feel welcome, but they also want people of other faiths to be welcome and understand them. so the more you are forcing synagogues or any religious entity to become hard targets, right, you're also denying them their ability to practice their faith. and i think that's what you're hearing much more eloquently than me from members of the jewish community. but certainly from a security perspective there is a loss of going from being a soft target to a hard target that you can't measure in security terms, right?...

That as a jewish american you're not safe anywhere. and we hear this throughout the jewish community. i work with many synagogues in terms of their safety and security, in terms of ensuring that they are safer. and the challenge or the horror of this for the community and those i speak to -- and my children are jewish -- is synagogues are meant to be open, right? in other words most religious institutions are. they want people of their own faith to feel welcome, but they also want people -- and i think that's what you're hearing much more eloquently than me from members of the jewish community...
