More Than 1800 Prisoners Escape During Sierra Leone Jailbreak As Police Place Bounty On Inmates

Nearly 2,000 inmates escaped during Sunday's attack on a military barracks, a prison and other locations in Sierra Leone, officials said on Monday. Colonel Shek Suleiman Masakui, Acting Director General of the Sierra Leone Correctional Service, said the attack lasted two hours. The assailants had sent the West African country thrown into panic in the early hours when gunfire was sent ringing across the capital Freetown. The government blamed "renegade soldiers" that it said had been repelled.

  No fewer than 13 soldiers and citizens lost their lives on Sunday in Freetown, Sierra Leonea's capital city as some "unidentified individuals" attempted to break into the country's armoury.   This was confirmed by the country’s military spokesperson, Colonel Issa Bangura, while revealing that the dead were mostly armed officers who were loyal to the government.

The Pademba Road Prison authorities in Freetown, Sierra Leone have confirmed that the Central Prison was breached and the inmates set free. SaharaReporters earlier reported that the government of Sierra Leone on Sunday morning confirmed that some "unidentified individuals" attempted to break into the country's armoury and had all been arrested. Freetown Central Prison, commonly known as Pademba Road Prison, is a prison facility on Pademba Road in Freetown. The prison was built to house 220 prisoners in the pre-independence era and now holds around 2000 prisoners.
