That? this is a map of the sea floor. it is a topographic map that represents elevation. it is no different on the sea floor. the zenith plateau indicated by the red box where they are searching is 1 mile to 2 miles on the sea floor. the red box indicates an area about 100 square miles to give you a sense of what they completed surveying. it is a large area. this is not a very detailed map. we cannot account for small changes and rocky surfaces. our best guess it is covered with sediment which is good for trying to find a debris field or man-made object on the sea floor. are you surprised, christina, there has been no debris washed up ashore or located anywhere in the ocean? you know, i am and i am not. i think they have done a very good job modelling where the ....

no, it is not. and you described it very well. it is a game of inches. as you move through the water, you stir up the bottom. you have to keep stopping and wait for the sediment to settle down and inch forward. you don t want to lose it. so you have to be very careful, a, not to damage it, and b, to bring it back up. right now it looks like it is back in the box, but the manipulator is now holding it in position so we re safe to bring it up in this condition. what would be the most dangerous thing to be that deep in the water where you have so few submersibles capable of reaching those depths? well, of course it comes to mind, if you re in a submersible, you like to know if there are rescue vehicles in this case, there are remote rovs, that have the tethers? ....

and the power comes from the surface. so they re relying on that to be able to move. relying on the communication link to be able to see where to move. and of course but anything that is fit with the thrusters are, which rovs are, and verticals are, you will kick up dust. right, that is one of the advantages of having human eyes down here. if you re looking you can see just how much sediment there is in the water right now. and we have these very bright lights. four of them on the outside of this vehicle that we re in right now. and still, bill, we can only see about four feet in front of us. so you would have to know exactly where that black box is to come down and then grab it with the claw before you can take it back up on the top. that is very true. and that is where things like ....

To get that box into the basket. i can feel the submersible moving while we are doing that. so you have to deal with currents. you have to deal with visibility. it would be pitch dark out there if it weren t for the bright lights on front of our submersible. but the point we are making here, you have to move so slowly because if you drop that box, if you make a quick move or watch what happens when we turn the propellers really fast, the thrusters on the front, it just blows up the sediment on the bottom. it is like blowing into a handful of flour. you would be momentarily blinded and then you have to stop and wait for everything to settle. here it comes in from the side. it s so pain staking down here. and these are some of the best circumstances we could have. we are only at 50 feet. imagine that difficulty multiplied by 200, two miles down. it would be such painstaking work at the bottom of the indian ....

Through. that s what they did with the martin, can you ask him to turn that on? chris? can you ask him to turn the cutting thing on? well, the thing is we have one of the cutting things we are going to show you next hour. this particular one right now is we re kind of hung on a rock. we re not in a position to do that. and then this is also realistically, some of the issues you can run into is when the submersible sets down, or rov, maybe it may be, the bottom itself can be a hazard. certainly. you we know, we re expecting that the bottom in that area will probably be very fine silt and very floury type bottom so as far as you sat down on it you immediately stir up a cloud of sediment and particularly when you re using down thrusters the sediment just rolls in. so you have to make your move quickly. do what you re going to do because the big dust cloud following you and then you have to sit and wait for it to settle down so you can see again. so it s a t matter of slow, ....
