And then after approximately two to three years they are able to change between male and female states. and the males will release spurn into the water column, the female take it in, and they re really good parents, they will look after their larvae until they re ready, then they spit them out. once they ve, kind of, spent two or three weeks in the water, they ll start searching around, when they develop a foot and then they settle. as well as being good parents, they are also good neighbours. an adult oyster can filter as much as 200 litres of water every day. so they can really improve water quality. they stabilise sediment, so they prevent things from washing away, act as a kind of natural sea defence, and also really enhance biodiversity, so they attract lots of other species to come and live on the sea bed. the oysters have been laid in no fishing zones, while the populations are restored. we re on the reef, good to go. so anyone hoping for a solent oyster supper will be disappoin ....
