Joining us now, dan simon was touching on it, elizabeth, how is the drinking water? it depends on so many different things. it depends on the level of these heavy metals in the water which we knew last week were very high. it depends whether, when they went downstream to where the water is taken in for drinking water, whether those water systems were given enough warning and we re told hey, shut off your pumps, don t take in this water, there s been a spill. but let s get to the levels of the metals in the water. they were very, very high last week. in fact, when the epa went out there, they were hundreds of times higher, in some cases thousands of times higher than the epa acceptable levels. now we re hearing that the levels have gone down. i think the toxicologists i ve been speaking to say look, you want to be weary when we hear that the levels have gone down. it may mean that the metals aren t in the water so much, but that they settled into the sediment, the dirt on the bottom. ....

You talk about remediating the damage that haste been done but this is an entire river system. you will go all the way out to the colorado with this flow. how do you essentially vacuum up the sludge and silt settled on the bottom of an entire river system? i believe it will be very difficult and extremely expensive. hopefully what will occur. to the extent it can be treated it will be treated. the rest of the heavy metals settle into the sediment and don t present a problem to those who are using the water. that would be i hope, what occurs. but you re right, this is 120 some odd miles of river. that is a lot of area to address. jon: well, and it is more than that, really because the an animas joins the colorado and the colorado will be carrying some of this stuff? that s exactly right. that s exactly right. jon: how would you assess the epa s response in the initial going? when something like this happens, you got to take ....

Contractor did not estimate properly? correct. how much water was behind that mine. correct. he shut down an old mine, ground water from underneath building up in that mine. they did not properly estimate how much water had backed up in there at huge pressure. so when they began moving the rock, dealing with what was capping it, trying to get a pipe in there to get that water out, it blew out like a volcano, 3 million gallons of this horrible stuff. and what is in this horrible stuff and what is the damage to fish, to other wildlife, and to humans being able to swim, boat, raft? this water contains heavy metals. that s the real problem. we re talking about lead, arsenic, possibly copper. this is what you would expect in that water. and these heavy metals don t deteriorate in the water. they flow downstream. depending on the stream rate flow, they will settle in. they get into the sediment. they can be fed by bottom ....

Anmass river. authorities are still working to deliver just how polluted the river is. our pedram javaheri joins us. we talked about this last hour. there are people still taking part in recreational activities on that river. how safe or unsafe is it? the epa has been pretty quiet about it. but the understanding so far is that they were out there trying to fictionx a leak. a worker pushed a backhoe and loosened sediment and uncorked this mine that had been abandoned since the 1920s. it came all the way down the animas river. types of contaminates. we ve had evidence that arsenic is in it, some lead, ....

Of interest, this mine was abandoned back in the 1920s. and officials knew there was a minor leak here. but what the epa had been doing in the last couple of days, trying to find a way to stop the minor leak that s occurring. one of the officials potentially pushed the backhoe and moved sediment. that pushed farther downstream. rio of the los animus. that was silverton, colorado tremendous area for tourist activity. here we have anything as far as kayaking, fishing, water for irrigation, all of that has been suspended as the state of emergency is issued. and guess what happens beyond ....
