letter to former staffers, telling them joe biden isn t out of the running just yet. in the letter, senator kaufman said, if he runs, he will run because of his burning conviction that we need to fundamentally change the balance in our economy and the political structure to restore the ability of the middle class to get ahead. nbc s kristen welker s at the white house with more. kristen, good morning. reporter: jose, good morning to you. we know that vice president biden remains undecided at this hour, but he is taking a serious, final look, as he s in his final deliberations about whether to get into this race. in addition to that letter that was sent out by former senator, former biden aide ted kaufman, the vice president himself making phone calls to organizers in early voting states and trying to see if he has a real path to victory in those states, trying to see how much support he actually has before he makes a final decision. now, by all accounts, if he does decide to get in
them to run, are senate appointees the new game changers. joining me is shawn, from real clear politics. let s talk about the appointees on the hill. in the senate specifically. two groups of them. those who were placeholders and use holding the seat for usually those who appointed them and some who make a run for themselves. tell us about the different groups. the place holders. senator good wi goodwin who was recently appointed and senator lemieux. may run for reelection shortly or want to have an election in their future. and then people at the end of their career, senator burris and senator kaufman of illinois and delaware. the people at the end of their career really have nothing to lose and so you saw some noises during the healthcare debate that senator burris might tank the healthcare bill because it wasn t liberal enough and they really had no leverage over him.
