Dismiss By Staff Writers Normal text size THE FIRST AUSTRALIAN V.C. Albert Jacka. Another list of honors for officers and soldiers of the British forces has been published. The Victoria Cross has been conferred upon an Australian, Lance-Corporal Albert Jacka, of the 14th (Victorian) Battalion, Australian Infantry Force. Lance-Corporal Jacka, for conspicuous bravery on the night of 19th May at Courtney’s Point. He was holding portion of a trench which four men heavily attacked. When all of them had been killed, seven Turks rushed the trench. Jacka gallantly attacked them single handed. He killed five by rifle fire and two with bayonet. ....

I know, it s annoying when you re sitting at home but there s only so much you can do at some points. with me now is eric foner with americans before and after the civil war. thanks very much. you heard basically i did. senator pearce and mr. begala s argument saying this was never intended to apply to the children of aliens. well, you know, i think that s not true. it was debated for months and the wording was very, very carefully work out. if they had meant to exclude any kind of people, aliens, children of aliens, they would have done so. it wasn t just about african-americans? no. it was primarily to establish the unquestionable citizenship of african-americans which, before the civil war, the dred scott decision said no black person could be a citizen. it was also to create a national standard of citizenship for everybody, not just black people. children of immigrants, irish immigrants, and as you said ....
