Pacquiao delivers 2nd push for boxing, combat commission
"Pambansang Kamao" Sen. Manny Pacquiao pushed for the creation of Philippine Boxing and Combat Sports Commission to promote the safety and welfare of Filipino boxers and combat sports athletes.
In his sponsorship speech of Senate Bill No. 2077, Pacquiao sought the support of his colleagues for the passage of the measure which aims to create separate commission for boxing and combat sports to give it stability and a clear sense of direction.
SBN 2077 is a consolidation of SBN 193 which he filed and SBN 805 filed by Sen. Ramon Bong Revilla Jr. Pacquiao first filed the measure during the 17th Congress. The Senate passed the bill but did not materialize into law.

The Senate Committee on National Defense and Security, Peace, Unification and Reconciliation on Wednesday said there is no need for a new law to penalize red-tagging as there were enough provisions under other judicial remedies for such cases.
“[T]here is no need to pass a law that penalizes red-tagging because recourse is already provided under the Revised Penal Code, Civil Code, special laws, and other judicial remedies,” the committee report read.
The committee said some of the existing remedies were already availed by progressive groups.
“Legal remedies, as exhaustively discussed in this Committee Report, are sufficient and available for personalities or groups that have been the subject of the so-called red-tagging and which some of them have already availed as evidenced by the cases filed in the Ombudsman,” the panel said.

Senate OKs bill allotting safe pathways for bike users, pedestrians

The Senate has approved on third and final reading the measure that seeks to provide a network of safe pathways dedicated for use of people who prefer to walk, ride bicycles or other non-motorized vehicles to work or go to other regular destinations.
Senate Bill No. 1582, or the proposed Safe Pathways Act was approved with 23 votes, no negative vote, and no abstention.
“This is good news to the biking community which has grown significantly during this time of a COVID (pandemic). More people are now using a bicycle to work and in their daily travels,” said Senator Pia Cayetano, principal author of the bill.

DILG lauds Senate for setting public hearings on economic amendments

CALOOCAN CITY, Jan. 26 (PIA) -- The Senate’s first public hearing on the proposed lifting of the protectionist provisions of the Constitution on Wednesday, Jan. 27, is a big leap to make the 1987 Constitution responsive to the current needs of the country, according to the Inter-Agency Task Force on Constitutional Reform (IATF-CORE) headed by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

The IATF-CORE lauded the Senate’s decision to tackle pending proposals to amend certain provisions in the 1987 Constitution as proposed by Senators Francis Tolentino, Ronald de la Rosa, and Richard Gordon.

“The start of public hearings in the Senate is an important step in revisiting the provisions of the Charter and make it more responsive to our current need which is to restart and boost the economy this year,” DILG Undersecretary and Spokesperson Jonathan Malaya said.
