Police are reminding the trucking industry to ensure their heavy vehicles are roadworthy, following an operation focusing on truck safety in Northland which has found almost one in five vehicles tested failed its inspection report.
Last week officers from Police’s Commercial Vehicle Safety Team, Waka Kotahi vehicle compliance officers and Worksafe have been monitoring truck movements between Northport and Auckland.
The operation was in response to approximately 800 additional heavy vehicle movements expected over a week period with trucks carrying about 1200 containers between the two regions.
Vehicles were being checked to ensure they were roadworthy to mitigate any risk to the public on the roads. ....

Northport-Auckland freight: Almost one-in-five trucks found unroadworthy


Police monitoring trucks on the road between Northport and Auckland have found almost one in five were unroadworthy and posed a serious risk to the public.

The police checks coincided with an abnormally large number of trucks moving freight between the two destinations after a large container ship bound for Auckland had to dock at Whangārei.
Trucks were expected to make about 800 additional trips over a week between the two destinations, carrying about 1200 containers.
Police inspected 534 vehicles, and 96 of them failed the inspections. ....

Police are warning trucking companies contracted to transport shipping containers from Northport to Auckland to ensure their vehicles meet safety standards or else they ll be written off the road.
The warning follows about half a dozen truck-and-trailer units being written off after failing the standards expected of the police commercial vehicle safety team at a checkpoint on Uretiti along State Highway 1, south of Whangārei, today. ....
