The Cleveland Police Department will classify the New Year’s Eve killing of Officer Shane Bartek as a “line of duty” death. Bartek’s family will be eligible for additional benefits based on the classification. Bartek was not working when he was killed outside an apartment building on Cleveland’s West Side.
Because the death of Bartek is being ruled as happening in the line of duty, the city of Cleveland is obligated to pay for a full funeral with honors.
Tamara McLoyd was charged with aggravated murder in the officer's death after allegedly ambushing him in the parking lot of an apartment building on Friday.
Since Bartek was shot and killed while off duty, the city of Cleveland is not obligated to pay for the services.
