Heavy demand and skyrocketing prices of tomatoes have prompted a farmer from Maharashtra to install a CCTV camera on his farm to keep an eye on his plantation of the kitchen staple.
A farmer from Maharashtra has installed CCTV cameras to protect his tomato crop. The farmer, Sharad Rawte, has 1.5 acres dedicated to tomato cultivation and estimates he could earn between Rs 600,000 ($8,000) and Rs 700,000. Rawte installed a solar-powered CCTV camera system worth Rs 22,000 after tomatoes were stolen from his farm recently. The cost of tomatoes, usually priced relatively low, has surged due to demand caused by poor monsoon seasons. A box of tomatoes (22-25 kg) now fetches Rs 3,000. The camera feed can be monitored on Rawte's smartphone.
