"The Fourth of July should be a fun time, you should be grilling, having a great time with family," Nadeau said. "What you don't want is to become a statistic."
Officials told NBC5 the buildings were evacuated as a precaution after a construction truck hit a gas line just after 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
All of the units in the Village Center apartment building are affordable homes, and six of the units are reserved for households facing homelessness.
"This is what makes Vermont beautiful; all of us coming together as neighbors, as community members," said Merdzanovic.
"Natural rock outcroppings, whether it's here, at Rock Point, at the Gorge, runs a certain level of risk so enjoy the view, don't get injured by the view," Deputy Chief Terry Francis said.
