Next phase in this search. sima, how long before the hunt resumes? this seems like they are giving up for awhile. reporter: yeah, it does feel that way. it s not what they are doing. they are trying to catch up with planning the next phase. it s taking people by surprise that means a pause of up to two months, john, before they start phase two. what they want to do is contracts for the equipment they are going to use. they want more equipment, several machines or underwater drones that will scan the southern indian ocean around 60,000 square kilometers of the zones they need to check out. they want more vehicles. one contracted to operate all of them. they want vehicle that is are side scan sonars so they can plow a great area of the ocean ....

Ruby to explain how ships use sound technology on a daily basis. not just for searches like this but you use it as a fishing vessel as well. this one here, we ve split the screen in two. one shows us the actual contours of the bottom. and because we use it for fishing, we want to know exactly what s on the bottom. so in this one we re looking at the last three meters of the bottom. and the other one shows the definition of the bottom, the up and down. so this one s flat, which is exactly what is on the bottom. and this is up and down, the depths. you mentioned the sonar equipment, it s extremely expensive, it s a lot different technology. the equipment that some of the british ships are using are side scan sonars. so the sound waves are bouncing out to the side of the ship. that will help them detect debris floating on the sitop of the water. how s the weather supposed to ....

Expiring. what do we do then? where do we go? that makes the search that much harder. the pingers in the air france search never operated. both were damaged. we only recovered one and determined it watts damaged prior to the aircraft crashing. the other one we never found. we know we can find an aircraft without pingers. without a tight area and no pingers and no debris, we are really up the creek here. what i think they intend to do is undertake an underwater search even then. so it is going to be a very long protracted search. i liken it to trying to cut the grass in a football field the size of the state of utah with a push mower. they are going to have to take the underwater vehicles with side scan sonars and sweep the lawn. we did a rough calculations of ....

Seen anyone really do, where is it headed, and it s really headed towards the northern part of indonesia. after that, it s out into the indian ocean. if it heads out into the indian ocean, which it had the fuel to do that, it s a whole other ball gain. the straits of malacca have lots of shallow water and this can confuse the sonar sound waves used to locate objects on the ocean floor, is that right? well, it is. but the typical way of looking would be using a sonar system, particularly side scan sonar systems, which are sort of the tool of choice. that would not be an issue. it s not that shallow. so using side scan sonars, you could put out a tremendous number of those assets into the field, because there s so many of them in the world. and also the use of auvs. ....
