Kingston School Committee simplifies its vote for a full return

Wicked Local KINGSTON – The vote they took wasn’t what they expected it to be, leading to a second unanimous vote that puts the Kingston Elementary and Intermediate schools on target to open for full-time in-school learning Monday, March 22. The original plan was to survey parents on school choice. Kingston School Committee members agreed Thursday, Feb. 18, to reconsider their vote of Feb. 8 that included contingencies for reopening March 22 and instead approved a stripped-down version of the original vote so there would be no doubt about their decision.  The conditions were removed. School Committee member Sheila Vaughn proposed a full in-person return with a remote option for kindergarten through sixth grade starting March 22. Commitment letters will go out to families on a per-student basis.

Silver Lake s proposed level-service budget may be cut

Wicked Local KINGSTON – The proposed Silver Lake budget appeared modest, but the assessments for the three towns are a different subject. With net state aid expected to decrease by $160,051, Silver Lake Regional School Committee members are recommending after meeting last week that the administration create a prioritized list of around $160,000 in budget cuts that may include staff cuts. Director of Business Services Christine Healy said state aide accounts for less than 30 percent of Silver Lake’s revenue, and there’s an increase of $538,489 in required minimum contribution, one of four factors that include the Silver Lake assessments. The breakdown was a $335,620 increase for Kingston, a $146,502 increase for Halifax and a $56,367 increase for Plympton.
