Wexford Council hire contractor to repair 300-year-old thatched property despite government's 'significant conservation project'

The Heritage Council of Ireland (HCI) has asked Wexford County Council (WCC) to hire contractors to repair a thatched house which had previously been subject to “one of the most significant conservation projects” in recent history. Restored in 2001, the house in Mayglass is believed to be over 300 years old and considered one of “the most important vernacular farmsteads in the country”.

Wexford councillor says large housing development will be constructed 'over my dead body'

The prospect of 65 new houses being developed without sufficient services for residents has left one Wexford councillor vowing to ensure the works will go ahead “over my dead body”. While welcoming the possibility of additional housing in her home town of Bunclody, Fianna Fáil councillor Barbara-Anne Murphy said that any attempts to simply “land the buildings into a small town” without any preparation would be faced with stiff opposition.
