The Ehattesaht and Nuchatlaht First Nations said in a statement that a team monitoring the 2-year-old calf saw it swim past the area where its mother had died, pass under a bridge and head down the inlet “all on her own.” The young orca still must leave the Little Espinosa Inlet to reach open ocean, The Associated Press reported.
After being stuck stuck in shallow water for weeks following her mother's death, the young killer whale is heading towards open water.
"It's been a joyful day, a really joyful day," said Ehattesaht First Nation Chief Simon John. "There was a lot of anticipation for this moment for the past five weeks."
