At least 96 people have been confirmed dead and 1,000 others are missing in Hawaii in what is the deadliest fire in the U.S. in over a century, according to data from the National Fire Protection Association.
Lawyers from the Watts Guerra, Singleton Schreiber and Frantz Law Group firms say their probes of the deadly Maui wildfires that killed 93 people show the blazes were caused by damaged equipment owned by Hawaiian Electric.
Hawaiian Electric, which operates the Maui Electric utility, has come under criticism for not turning off power despite warnings of critical fire conditions due to predicted dry, gale-force winds. The utility earlier this week said strong winds downed electric power lines and snapped power poles ahead of the blazes.
Officials have not said what sparked the blazes that were fanned by powerful winds and leveled the historic town of Lahaina.
