James Webb has been hit with yet another delay - this time to the tightening of its sunshield. This was originally expected to occur on January 2, but will now take place no earlier than today.
'Our telescope is blooming like a flower in space,' the US space agency tweeted,' adding that 'this marks the start of a major phase to #UnfoldTheUniverse: our sunshield deployment.'
The spacecraft, when fully operational, will peer deeper into the Universe than any previous astronomical instrument.
The $10 billion telescope, a joint project between NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), reached lunar altitude in the early hours of this morning.
Following the launch on December 25, NASA has now confirmed that the gimbaled antenna assembly has been successfully deployed.
