Covid-19 business support: where has Tendring's £51 million been spent?

Covid-19 business support: where has Tendring's £51 million been spent?
Businesses in Tendring have benefited from around £51 million in support through grants and business rates relief during the coronavirus pandemic, figures reveal.
It has been a challenging year for businesses in many different industries, and smaller companies have been particularly impacted by the onslaught of Covid-19.
The Government has brought in a range of support packages to help businesses throughout the crisis, with emergency grants for small businesses among the first to be announced in April last year.
The Small Business Grant Fund meant firms in England which pay little or no business rates were entitled to a one-off cash grant of £10,000 from their local council. It was offered alongside the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant Fund – a one-off payment of up to £25,000 – for small-to-medium-sized businesses.

Can our High Streets survive the pandemic?

Can our High Streets survive the pandemic?
During one week in lockdown, we spoke to local traders on Deptford High Street. What follows is snapshot of how many small local businesses are struggling to survive Covid

It was a normal week in lockdown, and the usually bustling and vibrant Deptford High Street was quiet. Many of the shops were boarded up, and some seemed to have permanently closed down. Shoppers were few and far between, even during the lunchtime rush, and the shops that were open were almost empty. It was clear the high street had been hit hard by the pandemic, and on the day we took our snapshot – March 5 2021 – 102 of the 167 businesses were closed due to lockdown restrictions; that’s 61 per cent.

Ipswich MP Tom Hunt on disused buildings | East Anglian Daily Times

However, the real question is why did we get to this position in Ipswich in the first place? And how do we ensure that going forward we avoid this from happening?
It was reported this week that it will probably cost around £100,000 to just get the pigeon faeces removed from the Paul’s Silo building. It is so caked onto the walls and the floors inside that it requires a mammoth industrial clean to even make it safe to occupy.
No wonder it is costing that much just to remove the poo! Nothing symbolises the problem we have more than this £100,000 figure. It costs this much because the building has been left unoccupied and uncared for over the past 23 years, leaving the bricks to have basically been penetrated by pigeon poo.

SEISS was designed by the government to provide assistance to individuals whose business has been affected by the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. Through a series of grants, four in total by the scheme’s scheduled finishing date, eligible people can expect to receive a proportion of their average trading income to provide them with the financial support they need. However, self-employed people are now being warned they must declare COVID-19 grants in future tax returns.
