LETTERS TO THE ED: Humbug of global warming, climate change

The humbug of global warming and climate change
Recently a letter spruiking the global warming (sorry climate change) alarmist mantra was published in some Queensland regional papers penned by Tony Fontes of Jubilee Pocket, Airlie Beach, in which he states, “As the driest inhabited continent, Australia already has a highly variable climate of droughts and flooding rains. This is why of all developed nations, Australia has been identified as one of the most vulnerable to climate change”.
I have a differing opinion, a pragmatist view of nature, and that is, “Nature and natural events have and will always beyond the perceived power some humans they have to control events like global fluctuation temperatures”.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Disrespect begins in the home

Who speaks like this: “Unmute yourself”? The normal way to say it, is: ”Speak up!”
This is the Federal Government's attempt, by a series of advertisements, to display genuine concern for “disrespect” and abuse towards females in our society.
Is this just a distraction from all the goings-on after hours in federal parliament, for which there is no excuse?
How men in power handle criticism, says a lot about our society.
Men who abuse their position, to gain sexual advantage of subordinates, have no excuse.
It is hypocritical of people in Canberra’s glasshouse, to throw stones at people in the broader community, when it’s obvious they need to clean out their own house. It behoves our leaders to set the example.

LETTERS TO THE ED: Live and let live and stop controlling

Even the beloved “Dr Seuss” books and “Sesame Street” aren’t exempt!
It is a momentous task to eliminate every offending era or icon.
Who decides?
Why not delete all history books, so as not to offend those whose ancestors may have caused harm to current descendents.
In reality, the social and political contexts of many icons deemed offensive today, may not align with today’s society, yet are there for us to learn from.
To discount some but allow others, may itself offend certain cultures and demographics which still value these.
The popular Sydney “Mardi Gras” festival offends the Christian community, but that is ignored by the “Cancel Culture” police.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Our region has lost a great man

Lea Taylor
Lea Taylor was Mayor from 1991 to 1997 in Rockhampton city; he left the mayoral position to work on his property.
I met Lea Taylor in 2012 when he wanted to run for mayor and try and get a team of councillors elected with him, to ensure debt levels were reduced and that our region could have a strong future.
“Experience you can rely on”, was the slogan and I joined the Regional Independent team.
There is one thing that I will never forget about Lea, is the fact that he had a strong work ethic.
There were many long hours put into running campaigns and I remember at times, helping him produce videos up to 2am.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Rally around female veterans

International Women’s Day
This International Women’s Day (March 8), Mates4Mates is encouraging people to get involved and support the female veteran community.
This year, the theme is Choose to Challenge, providing an opportunity to celebrate women’s achievements and take action to change the world for the better.
We know that veteran issues are often seen as a male-centric issue, but it’s important that female veterans impacted by service feel seen and heard.
We want them to know that there is support available for them too.
Nearly one third of all those reaching out for support at Mates4Mates are women – many who are veterans.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Leave the coal in the ground

Clive and coral don't mix
Clive Palmer wants to build a coal mine 10km from the waters of the Great Barrier Reef and the Queensland Government has said okay, we will consider it.
No, we will not consider it.
Someone needs to remind Clive and the Queensland Government that the only way coral and coal can exist together is to leave the coal in the ground.
This is a very bad idea on many levels.
First and foremost, is global warming, fuelled primarily by the burning of coal.
The impacts on the reef are well-known and devastating.
We do not need another new coal mine to add to the problem.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Dry version of Snowy 2 won't work

The Brick Balloon
The Australian Snowy 2 hydro scheme plans to use electricity to pump water up hill to get some of that energy back by running the water downhill again.
Some Australian mining companies are planning a dry version of Snowy 2 – a huge brick-powered battery using the force of gravity to drive a generator when solar and wind energy are on strike.
Each unit of this brick-powered battery would comprise a 30 storey tower enclosing a 35 tonne brick which is hauled up using surplus renewable energy (around noon on any clear windy day) and then released to turn generators when there is no renewable energy being produced (every still night or calm cloudy day).
