Nigeria: A New Generation Steps Up

Editor's Note
“The protest is for our lives, it’s for our future. We want SARS to
end but SARS is just the beginning. They should just wait for us.
We’re not quiet anymore.” [This response appears] typical of the
critical mass of protesters who are around 18-22 years old, are
particularly fearless, and are protesting for the first time. -
Ayodeji Rotinwa, Deputy Editor of African Arguments
Nigerian Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, returning to Nigeria just
before the EndSars protests began, wrote this earlier this week:

Given the increasing cases of ethnic crisis across geopolitical zones and states in Nigeria, the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Group in collaboration with the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung and the European Union recently held a multi-stakeholders’ consultative forum on peace and security challenges in Nigeria themed “Ethnicity, Ethnic Crisis and National Security: Implications and Consequences”. Chiemelie Ezeobi reports
Nigeria has over 400 ethnic groups, which ordinarily should amplify its rich culture but the reverse seems to be the case. These groups are broken down between religious, languages, and tribal lines. These divisions existed ever since but were further broken down at independence to a multi-ethnic nation state.

Insecurity: Step down or be impeached, coalition tells Buhari
The coalition says President Buhari and his administration have failed in their primary responsibility of ensuring the security and welfare of Nigerians.
4 min read
A coalition comprising 43 frontline civil society organisations and Femi Falana’s law firm have asked President Muhammadu Buhari to resign or be removed from office by the
National Assembly if he cannot address the persistent insecurity in the country.
This is one of the five-point demand of the coalition in a statement on Sunday declaring that Mr Buhari has failed in his primary responsibility of ensuring the security and welfare of Nigerians.

NATIONAL SECURITY: BUHARI HAS SO FAR, FAILED. – Enough is Enough Nigeria

Introduction
Nigeria is in dire straits.  All over the country, Nigerian citizens, including children, are killed daily by terrorists and criminals as well as in extra-judicial killings by state actors with the government doing little or nothing about it. The government, through the Minister of Defence, has instead callously abdicated its responsibility and called Nigerian citizens ‘cowards’ and urged Nigerians to ‘defend themselves’.
Kidnapping for ransom has assumed an industrial and deadly scale never witnessed on the African continent. Our children are no longer safe in schools and Nigerian citizens and communities are now pauperised by terrorists who extort huge ransoms while murdering their hostages. We condemn, in the strongest possible terms, what has now become the government’s standard state policy of using taxpayers’ money to pay terrorists thereby funding and encouraging terrorism and criminality.

Escalation of Threats Against Human Rights Activists Putting Nigeria In Negative Global Spotlight – Enough is Enough Nigeria

November, 2020
The undersigned coalition of Civil Society Organisations working to promote democracy, human rights and accountable governance hereby express grave concerns about the rise in the level of attacks targeted at human rights activists and pro-democracy campaigners especially since the start of the #EndSARS protests.
Despite the local and global condemnations, which have trailed the death of protesters as a result of extrajudicial killings by security forces and the activities of sponsored non-state elements, it is worrisome that there has been no remorse on the part of those perpetrating these atrocities. This Coalition is aware that the Nigerian authorities have stepped up measures to clamp down on individuals, organisations and corporate bodies alleged to be the masterminds of the protests.
