Authorities must take stern action against illegal sand traders who are destroying rivers across Bangladesh.
Illegal and indiscriminate sand extraction from the rivers is increasing at an alarming rate, with the backing of ruling party politicians, causing massive erosion of riverbanks and destruction of rural settlements and farmlands.
The River and Delta Research Centre (RDRC), a research institute, has found that around 77 rivers face the onslaught of aggressive extraction of sand.
Defying the law, locally influential people are illegally extracting sand from many sites of different rivers and seashores across the country, affecting biodiversity and upsetting ecosystems in the country’s waters.
