Taipei urged not to change pension investment rules

The government should not change labor pension fund management regulations to allow workers to select their own investment targets, workers’ rights advocates told a news conference in Taipei yesterday.
“We urge the Ministry of Labor to maintain its position on the issue and resist lobbying from securities investment firms, which have been coveting this fat cow [labor pension funds] for years,” Taiwan Labor Front secretary-general Son Yu-liam (孫友聯) said, adding that the group is also planning to petition lawmakers to resist the change.

Tsai's wage pledge draws cheers, jeers

A remark by President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) on Monday that the government hopes to continue raising the nation’s monthly minimum wage every year drew mixed reactions from labor unions and trade groups yesterday, from expectations about a steeper increase next year to concerns over adverse effects on businesses already affected by COVID-19 restrictions.

The Ministry of Education has banned Kao Yuan University from enrolling overseas students for the next academic year, after students complained of being forced to work excessive hours in jobs unrelated to their studies.
