Calls to restrict alcohol sales disregard state of the SA economy

Cape Business News

CBN Audio:
The South African Liquor Brandowners Association (Salba) has responded negatively to a recent statement issued by the Southern African Alcohol Policy Alliance (Saapa), in which Saapa urged the government to respond to the looming third wave of the Covid-19 infections by strengthening the current restrictions on alcohol access.
Salba slammed the statement, saying that it demonstrates Saapa’s lack of regard for the state of the country’s economy, growing unemployment and collapse of businesses partly as a result of the three bans on alcohol sales over the past year. It added that the proposed restrictions on alcohol advertising and other alcohol policy interventions are irrelevant to the national response to the possibility of third wave of Covid-19.

South African Liquor Brandowners Association spokesperson Sibani Mngadi says alcohol is not the cause of the COVID-19 infections.
The alcohol industry is accusing the Southern African Alcohol Policy Alliance for using the lockdown and the state of disaster to push for the enactment of stricter alcohol regulations outside the ordinary legislative processes in an effort to help the country not enter into the third wave.
South African Liquor Brandowners Association spokesperson Sibani Mngadi argued that alcohol is not the problem when it comes to the spreading of COVID-19 and that they have taken measures within the industry in ensuring people will be safe.

The South African Liquor Brandowners Association (Salba) says it is wary of a push by anti-alcohol groups to use the country’s Covid-19 lockdown to change rules around the sale of alcohol.
The local alcohol industry and its stakeholders share the government’s concern over the pandemic and will continue to support meaningful measures to flatten the curve, said Sibani Mngadi, chairperson of Salba.
He said the industry has repeatedly made recommendations to the government through the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) on measures to deal with surges in Covid-19 infections and will continue to work with the government in an effort to save lives, while protecting the livelihoods of a million jobs within the alcohol value-chain.

CAPE TOWN - There have been growing calls for government to impose restrictions on alcohol, as the country approaches the third wave.
Two consecutive weeks of increases in positive Covid-19 cases in SA;12,531 positive cases were confirmed for the week May 3-9 (46% increase over the previous week), and 17,133 cases for May 10-16 (38% increase over the previous week).
Although Health Minister Zweli Mkhize says new restrictions are inevitable as the country approaches the third wave, he has also called for the public not to panic and said discussions were underway with the National Coronavirus Command Council, on what is the best way to reduce the numbers from increasing.
