Belize City police are on high alert tonight following the fatal shooting of gang figure forty-four-year-old Elwin Lewis. The notorious street figure is considered an elder in the underground world in Southside Belize City. He is considered one of the leaders of the George Street Gang. He was shot several times near Gwen Lizarraga School.
He was accused of the July 20, 2023, daylight murder of Nicoli Rhys on Neal Pen Road that prompted a month-long State of Emergency in parts of Southside Belize City. But David Noel Sutherland, 31, of Custard Apple Street, was informed today in court that the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions had sent a memorandum to the court, directing the court to withdraw the charge of murder against Sutherland for reasons of insufficient evidence to prove the charge gathered by police.
