September rains in key agricultural regions have raised hopes of easing food inflation in India. The higher precipitation has benefited the major crops, rice and soya bean, which have seen an increase in the area sown. The paddy sowing area has increased by 2.7% on-year, while soya bean acreage has risen by 1.3%. The rainfall is expected to continue until September 21, and if it persists, experts believe there will not be a significant difference in crop size compared to last year. However, the final harvest will determine the impact on inflation.
A better monsoon in September for key agricultural regions has raised hopes that food inflation may ease, with higher precipitation helping the two major kharif crops, rice and soya bean, that have seen an increase in the area sown.
According to Geojit, India's vegetable oil imports rose sharply by 33% on year to 1.9 mln tn in August from 1.4 mln tn in the corresponding period last year, the Solvent Extractors' Association of India said.
