CNN State of the Union With Candy Crowley March 23, 2014 16:06:00

Steven trimble, aviation reporter and editor for flight global. thanks for joining me. first question, why are we halfway through the life of a battery? it can t cost ma much to change out batteries for something that lasts longer than 30 days. every component on an aircraft goes through a very expensive certification process. when these black boxes were design and certified there was a spec developed and that was certified if you change anything in that it s a very long and costly process to requalify it to the conditions that a black box has to survive. you mean requalify for government and faa regulations. that s a problem, isn t it. it seem crazy in this day and age we can have a major civilian airliner vanish in thin air and we re down to a 30-day ping to find it. the technologies are there to much better track aircraft by ....

Because the batteries, the potential location for the box seems to be very, very inhospitable. we talked about this before. it s not an exact, hard deadline. walk us through this. well, the spec says it goes 30 days but often times it goes longer than that. occasionally 35 or so forth. but occasionally picked it up where it was well over 35 days. so there is some hope of an elapsed time. and then they have found flight data recorders and cockpit voice recorders in the past without the ping. i mean, long after the ping has run out. the poster child for that is the air france accident off brazil five years ago. and it took them two years to find that flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder. then it was very valuable when they did find it. we re going to be talking to a specialist about that experience and what it offers today. ....

CNN Erin Burnett OutFront March 19, 2014 23:33:00

There is a nothing left but a tiny spec of light that even a trained eye would not recognize right away as an airplane. could be a target. this could be a target here. yeah. but you don t know for sure? we don t know for sure. aid very to concentrate on that particular piece of data. reporter: in the wee hours of the morning when flight 370 seemingly vanished archetypeny sp a tiny speck of light could have not attracted attention. you and i at home in bed, asleep, colors are there expecting to see targets with a transponder on board. not looking for any surprise. not looking for any surprise. reporter: just one more theory in an increasingly vexing case, a 777 disappears by hiding in plain sight. hiding in plain sight. incredible, david. one of the things people say is that the early morning hours could explain the lack of detection by civilian colors are. people are tired. people respect looking. they are just used to their routine job. but what about the military? ....

Very far this way and still stay at 1,000 miles or you can sit there and other bit. it s a huge area. let me dumb this down a little bit. you are saying there s 2200 miles that we have to look at based upon the last information that we know to be a fact, so how many of our assets are there, the navy, the air force. if it s there, will we find it? if it s in the water, we will find it probably sooner rather than if it is on land or if someone saw it land. here s why. if it s in the water we have submarines in other words, we have very, very sensitive sense to sensors. they will pick up the black boxes. they will operate for 30-days. that s their spec. the airplane is in the water for seven days. the clock is ticking. if it landed on land it probably ....
