Telecom Bill: The bill empowers the government to suspend or prohibit use of telecom equipment from countries or a person as may be notified in case of national security. Telecom equipment needs to be procured from trusted sources only. To protect telecom consumers, the bill proposes that prior consent should be taken for receiving certain messages such as promotional, advertising, etc.
Meanwhile, the government, in the Telecommunications Bill 2023 tabled in Parliament on Monday, said administrative assignment of spectrum without auctions could be undertaken for services such as radio backhaul, in-flight and maritime connectivity, satellite services including global mobile personal communication by satellite services (GMPCS) licences, among others.
Spectrum Auction: “Issue appropriate clarifications that the government may consider the assignment of spectrum through an administrative process,” the Centre urged the Supreme Court in its petition, a copy of which was seen by ET. “Pass such an order, or further orders as this court may deem fit and proper... in the interest of justice.”
"The administrative allocation of spectrum to satellite companies will be for point-to-point connection only. If they will provide services like access service providers (mobile operators), then allocation will be through auction," a source who did not wish to be identified, said.
