Saskatoon city councillor Darren Hill’s job as Ward 1 representative could be on the line at Monday’s council meeting.
After the delayed civic election last Nov. 13, all council candidates were expected to disclose their campaign contributions by Feb. 16.
According to a report filed by returning officer Scott Bastian, nine council candidates did not file by that deadline. That included Hill, who was elected by a margin of just 56 votes over runner-up Kevin Boychuk.
Boychuk was also on that list. Hill did finally file on March 4, with expenses totaling $14,977.49 ....

Saskatoon city councillor could be forced to step down over late campaign paperwork

Ward 1 Coun. Darren Hill may be required to resign his seat after failing to meet a deadline to disclose campaign contributions and expenses.
Hill was the only elected councillor who was late filing statements on campaign contributions and expenses, according to a report going before City Council on Monday.
The report says the statements were required to be filed by Feb. 16. A copy of the declaration form shows it was signed by Hill on March 4. Campaign contributions and expenses were each declared as $14,997.46.
In an interview, Hill said the reason for the late filing relates to health issues and along with the COVID-19 pandemic. ....

Saskatoon Mayor Charlie Clark says he’s not in a position to speak for or about Ward 1 councillor Darren Hill.
However, Hill will get the chance to do so on his own, at Monday’s regular council meeting.
In a report filed Thursday, Saskatoon returning officer Scott Bastian noted Hill didn’t send in his campaign disclosure forms until March 4, more than two weeks after the Feb. 16 deadline. Eight other candidates also sent in their paperwork late.
According to Bylaw 8491, The Campaign Disclosure and Spending Limits Bylaw, 2006, Section 24, council candidates who file their paperwork after the posted deadline are potentially subject to fines of up to $5,000 per day until the necessary documents are submitted. ....
